The Tooth Fairy Story Film Analysis: Animated Journey with a Sprinkling of Kid-Appropriate Preteen Love Story
Throughout this animated adventure aimed at tweens, the fairy community focuses on gathering baby teeth of slumbering youngsters and placing treasure under their pillows. Board-riding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about spending his future to gathering baby teeth—a feeling that’s entirely reasonable. He’s only slightly more curious about the financial workings behind it all: the fairies hand over the molars to unseen goblins, who supply gold as payment. But Van’s curiosity is piqued when he catches sight of a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be far from the hideous creature he had imagined.
A Forbidden Connection and Common Enemy
Everything is prepared for an adventure with a gentle touch of teen romance (though it’s perfectly appropriate for younger kids). The fairy and goblin groups are estranged from one another, and nothing fuels the thrill of the forbidden to bring people as one. Both groups as seen here are incredibly similar, yet each holds biased views about the opposite side. The fairies are supposed to be self-centered types, given to taking whatever they fancy, while goblins are allegedly dim-witted, foul-smelling, and primitive, but are in fact intelligent and technologically advanced.
Naturally, such a setup needs a common enemy to join forces against, and that need is met in the form of some nasty spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. There’s no beating about the bush with these guys: they want to eat the goblins and fairies, and they serve as quite savage, though not especially competent, villains.
Ideal Viewers and Final Thoughts
You won’t find all that many children’s animations targeting the kind of audience that is beginning to have first crushes, but are not mature enough for whatever teenagers view these days in lieu of popular teen sagas. Should your youngster falls into this age group, it probably won’t to become their new all-time fave, but you could do worse.
A Tooth Fairy Tale releases in Scottish cinemas from 10 October and the rest of the UK from 24 October.
