More than 250 people have been arrested in Charlotte, North Carolina, as part of continuing federal border security operations, according to government statements.

Widening Federal Operations

Charlotte marks the most recent American city to face heightened federal involvement, following similar measures in major metropolitan areas like Chicago and Los Angeles previously. Federal authorities have claimed that those arrested include criminal elements and street gang participants.

Regional Opposition

However, community representatives and citizens have actively protested the arrests, which federal officials have designated "Operation Charlotte's Web". The state's top elected official has claimed that people are being selected based on their ethnicity.

"We've observed covered, armed agents in military-style garb driving plain vehicles, focusing on American citizens based on their skin tone, engaging in racial bias and detaining random people in community locations," commented the top official. "This approach is not strengthening our security."

Official Stance

In a newly released declaration, a federal representative stated that the operation has resulted in the arrest of "some of the most dangerous criminal illegal immigrants", comprising street gang participants.

Additional subjects arrested had been sentenced for diverse offenses, such as attacks against law enforcement personnel, DWI offenses, theft and tampering with government papers, according to the authority.

Municipal Feedback

The city's chief executive, likewise a liberal politician, encouraged federal officials to work with "consideration" for the city's principles. She furthermore praised those who participated in significant groups on Saturday to protest the federal authority's operations in the city.

"I am seriously worried by numerous of the recordings I've watched," remarked the municipal executive. "To everyone in Charlotte who is experiencing anxious or afraid: you are not by yourself. Your city backs you."

Persisting Operations

Federal agencies have not disclosed how long the operations will continue. Chicago's crackdown commenced in September and persists active. Comparable with other cities facing immigration enforcement, various foreign nationals in Charlotte are staying indoors due to apprehension about federal officers in the metropolitan area, according to community reporting.

The state governor indicated he's observing reports that the campaign will expand to Raleigh, an additional North Carolina urban center, next.

"Yet again, I call on federal officials to concentrate on violent criminals, not community members walking along the street, going to religious services, or putting up Christmas displays," he declared.
