Boston's Leader Michelle Wu Counters President Trump's Threat to Relocate World Cup Games from Boston

Boston's mayor, Mayor Wu, suggested that the municipality was ready for a dispute with President Donald Trump over his assertion that he could instruct FIFA to remove World Cup games from Gillette Stadium, situated 22 miles south-west of the city.

Wu spoke on a Boston-based podcast this week to answer comments from the Trump administration, which had described her as "far-left." Trump had threatened that he would call FIFA President Gianni Infantino if Boston did not "improve its situation."

Much of it is locked down by agreement so that no single person, even if they live in the White House, can change it.

She continued, "We're in a world where for attention, for power, for pushing the boundaries ... ongoing threats ... are issued at people and cities who stand their ground and comply or follow along to a hateful agenda."

She further stated, "We are going to continue being ourselves, and that means, sadly, we are going to be part of a discussion that is targeting Boston's values." She finished by emphasizing her support for the Boston, declaring, "Ten toes down for our city."

The President's Comments and FIFA's Involvement

Recently, Infantino was photographed alongside President Trump at the Gaza summit in Egypt. The FIFA president has also visited the Oval Office and given World Cup tournament and Club World Cup trophies to the president as presents.

On Tuesday, Trump was asked about unrest in a Boston neighborhood that involved a police vehicle being burned. He responded, "If somebody is doing a bad job, and if I feel there's danger, I would call Infantino – the head of FIFA, who's phenomenal."

He continued, "I would say: 'Let's move into another location' and they would comply. He might not prefer it. But he would do it without hesitation." Trump also specifically targeted Mayor Wu, saying, "Their mayor is not good ... she's radical left, and they're taking over some areas in Boston. That's a pretty big statement, right?"

Previous Warnings and Upcoming Tournament Information

Trump has previously suggested that he would have the same conversation with the FIFA president about relocating games from Seattle and San Francisco, which are part of the 16 locations across the continent.

The US is joint hosts the 2026 tournament with Mexico and Canada. The expanded tournament is planned to be played from 11 June to July 19 in the coming year.
